
Sommo Falls Short in Strong Final Start

AUGUSTA, NJ - Despite a terrific performance by Matt Sommo in his final start, Joe Maloney and Marcus Jensen led the Rockland Boulders to a 5-0 win over the Sussex County Miners on Sunday afternoon at Skylands Stadium.
Sommo (5-12) took the mound for the Miners (38-58) in his final professional start. Through the first eight innings, the right-hander gave up only 2 runs on four hits. However, in the ninth, the Boulders (62-34) knocked home three more runs against Sommo to put the game out of reach. Sommo finished with five runs allowed over 8.1 innings. He surrendered seven hits and struck out six.
Maloney went 3-4 and fell just a triple shy of the cycle. Maloney opened the scoring in the fourth with an RBI double and added a run in the sixth with a run-scoring single. In the ninth, Maloney drilled a two-run home run over the centerfield wall in the ninth inning to seal the victory for the Boulders.
Marcus Jensen pitched seven shutout innings and gave up only two hits to cap off a tremendous performance. Jensen (8-2) only recorded two strikeouts, but faced the minimum number of batters over seven frames.
Ryan Mathews was the bright spot in the Miners' offense. Mathews went 3-3 with three singles.Cory Morales was the only other Miner to contribute a hit in the ballgame.
The Miners wrap up the 2015 season on Monday afternoon. Susssex County hosts the Boulders at 1:05 PM at Skylands Stadium.
