Maloney Powers Rockland to Victory

(AUGUSTA, NJ) -The Rockland Boulders pulled away from Sussex County with a three-run ninth, earning a 5-0 win at Skylands Stadium on Sunday afternoon. Joe Maloney drove in four runs, including his 14th home run of the season to aid the Boulders (62-34) who tied a franchise record with their 27th road win of the season.

A pitcher's duel which threatened the league record for shortest game in Can-Am history saw Rockland take a 1-0 lead on Maloney's RBI single in the fourth. Maloney added to his RBI total with a two-out double in the sixth off Miners starter Matt Sommo, giving the Boulders a 2-0 lead. Those two runs were more than enough for Boulders pitching but not for the Player of the Year. Maloney added two more RBI in the top of the ninth with a two-run blast to dead center.

Boulders starting pitcher Marcus Jensen was in complete control, going seven shutout innings allowing just two hits and striking out a pair. The righty improved to 8-2 on the season, throwing just 75 pitches in his final start of the regular season. Sommo (5-12), making the final start of his professional career, gave up all five runs on seven hits, striking out six in eight and one-third innings.

Maloney paced the Boulders offense going 3-for-4 with four RBI, finishing a triple shy of the cycle. Ryan Stovall drove in his third RBI of the year in the ninth with a single. Luis Sanz earned his 19th save of the year, completing a game in which neither pitching staff issued a walk or hit a batter.

The Boulders conclude the regular season on Labor Day, Monday, September 7, with a 1:05 pm first pitch at Skylands Stadium. Stephen Harrold (7-5, 4.45 ERA) will toe the rubber for Rockland while the Miners send Francisco Rodriguez (5-0, 2.10 ERA) to the hill in the final game of their expansion season.
