San Diego Sockers News Release

Kraig Chiles scored two goals and added a pair of assists as the San Diego Sockers defeated the Tacoma Stars 8-6 in front of 3,064 at the Del Mar Arena. Dan Antoniuk had two goals and an assist for San Diego, while Aaron Susi and Diego Rovira each scored twice. The Sockers (2-0 PASL-Pro) celebrated their 11th major indoor championship prior to the game by hanging their championship banner from the rafters.

"I don't think we had a crowd that big all season last year," said Chiles after his four point performance, "it gave us all a lot of energy and we wanted to show the crowd what we can do.

The Sockers controlled the pace early, jumping out to a 4-1 lead after the first quarter. Susi scored twice in the early action, taking advantage of the Tacoma Stars' decision to apply high pressure in the defensive zone. Tacoma packed it in defensively in a scoreless second quarter, but Diego Rovira brought the Del Mar Arena crowd to life with two pretty goals in third, one set up on a beautiful give-and-go by defender John Krause.

"I was going to come off the field but Krause gave me a look and then left a perfect ball for me," said Rovira, "I was excited to be able to help the team put away the game."

The Stars--led by player/coach Greg Howes' two goals and two assists--made a pair of fourth quarter comebacks to climb within two goals, but late tallies by Antoniuk and Chiles helped seal the San Diego victory. Tacoma (1-1) now travels to Revolucion Tijuana tomorrow afternoon, while the Sockers will host the California Cougars next Saturday night at the Del Mar Arena.

The crowd of 3,064 was the biggest in the two-year PASL-Pro tenure of the Sockers.
