West Michigan Whitecaps News Release
COMSTOCK PARK, MI - Evan Bigley's grand slam highlighted a six-run sixth inning for the Beloit Snappers as they rocked the West Michigan Whitecaps, 9-3, at Fifth Third Ballpark Tuesday night. Game one of the series belonged to Bigley as he went 3-5 on the night needing only a triple for the cycle.
The Whitecaps opened the scoring in the first when Bryan Pounds' RBI double to left plated Brandon Douglas for a 1-0 lead.
Beloit tied the game in the third as Bigley's RBI double chased home Drew Thompson from third base.
West Michigan would counter in the bottom of the third as center fielder Ben Guez lined an RBI single to center, and Brandon Douglas scored again to put the âCaps ahead, 2-1.
The Whitecaps would hold that lead until the huge sixth inning for Beloit. The Snappers sent all 9 hitters to the plate in the inning, scoring 6 times, to take the lead for good.
Snappers' second baseman Drew Thompson added a couple more runs in the seventh on a two-run triple. That made the score, 9-2.
The âCaps would add one more tally to their total as DH Billy Nowlin's groundball brought in Brent Wyatt for a 9-3 score.
West Michigan starter Brayan Villareal was effective yet wild. He lasted 3.2 innings, giving up 1 hit, striking out 8 but walking 5 Snappers. Reliever Anthony Shawler worked 2 innings, allowing 5 earned runs for the loss.
Beloit used solid pitching from starter Michael Allen, Bruce Pugh who got the win, and Steven Blevins.
Brandon Douglas finished the night 3-5 as he got on base all 5 times to the plate.
Game two of the series begins Wednesday night at 6:35 at Fifth Third Ballpark. Left hander Matt Hoffman will go for the Whitecaps, and Beloit will turn to right hander Shooter Hunt.
