The Calgary Vipers continued to swing hot bats as they crushed the Reno Silver Sox 14-3 at Peccole Park in Reno, Nevada. The Snakes have scored 26 runs in the opening two games of this three game series and with the victory improve their record to 17-7. Calgary remains in first place in the North Division and are now six games ahead of the second place Edmonton Cracker-Cats with 20 contests remaining in the first half of the Golden Baseball League season.
The Vipers opened the scoring in the top of the second inning when Darryl Brinkley singled, Felix Jose reached on a throwing error by pitcher Jeremy Flanagan, and Travis Drader scored Brinkley with a run batted in groundout. The bases were loaded after Patrick Arlis was hit by a pitch and Jorge Tang reached on a fielding error by center fielder Gary Harris. Jorge Mejia plated a run with a RBI groundout, Arlis scored on a wild pitch, and Nelson Castro knocked in a run with a double for the 4-0 lead.
Reno grabbed a run back in the bottom of the inning when D.J. Dixon singled, Carlos Madrid reached on a throwing error by third baseman Travis Drader in an attempt to start a double-play, and Ryan Brown picked up a RBI base hit.
Five more runs were added in the top of the third inning as Brinkley singled, Jose reached on an error by second baseman Madrid, and Drader walked to load the bases. Arlis followed with a two run single, Tang knocked a smash two run double, and after a Mejia groundout and Castro walk, Drew Miller cashed a run with a single for the 9-1 advantage.
The Snakes hit double digits in runs in the top of the fourth inning when Brinkley came around to score.
That run was taken right back by the Silver Sox in the bottom of the inning with three singles from Ross McCoy, Brett Flowers, and Dixon for the 10-2 score.
Calgary continued the scoring in the top of the sixth frame with a Arlis single, Tang double, Mejia RBI groundout, and Miller RBI base hit for the double-digit advantage at 12-2.
After a walk to Colin Moro in the top of the seventh inning Kevin Price blasted his first homerun of the season for the 14-2 lead.
The Silver Sox capped the scoring in the bottom of the inning with a Ryan Crespi single and a Flowers RBI double for the 14-3 final.
Reggie Rivard (2-0) pitched for the Vipers and won his second consecutive start in tossing a complete game and giving up only two earned runs. Jeremy Flanagan (0-2) picked up the loss.
Mejia and Miller extended their hitting streaks to 14 and 13 games respectively while also both reaching base for the 24th game consecutively to start the season.
