Chico Outlaws News Release
CHICO, CA - After appearing seven times in relief to open the season, Trevor Caughey made quite an impression Friday in a starting role, scattering three hits over seven shutout innings to lead the Chico Outlaws to a 9-1 victory over the Edmonton Cracker Cats in the opener of a three-game series in front of over 2,300 at Nettleton Stadium.
The Outlaws wasted little time in getting Caughey some offensive support - Eric Pringle doubled home Steve Boggs in the bottom of the 1st inning...then in the 2nd Boggs delivered a two-out single to knock in Shane Cronin and later scored on a throwing error to put Chico up 3-0. Caughey, meanwhile, retired the first eight Edmonton batters he faced until Jonathan Castro singled in the 3rd inning. In the 4th the Outlaws would extend their lead with a pair of two-out RBI hits - Julian Benavidez singled home Boggs, then on the next pitch from Cracker Cats starter Phil Sobkow Jose Valdez tripled to center field, driving in Benavidez and Pringle to make the score 6-0.
Chico utilized the long ball in the 6th inning - with Pringle aboard, Casey Garrison lined a homer over the right field wall to go up 8-0. In the 7th Todd Gossage scored on a Garrison groundout to give the Outlaws a 9-0 cushion...and Caughey, who retired the last six batters he faced and 10 of the last 11, handed the game over to the bullpen to get the final six outs. Edmonton avoided a shutout when catcher Jordan Lundberg belted a home run off reliever Derrick Landavazo to lead off the Cracker Cats 8th...Landavazo came back to strike out three straight batters, and Tyler Pearson came in to get the final three outs in the 9th to lock down the victory and give Chico their third win over Edmonton in four tries this season.
Caughey (2-1) struck out four and didn't walk a batter in earning the victory...Sobkow (1-1) allowed five earned runs in five-and-a-third innings to take the loss. Boggs, Pringle and Benavidez combined for six of the Outlaws nine hits on the night...Castro went 2-for-3 to pace the Cracker Cats, who held to just five total hits. Friday's win improves Chico's season record to 8-15...Edmonton slipped to 11-13 and fell five-and-a-half games behind first place Calgary in the Golden Baseball League's North Division first half standings. Game two of the series is set for Saturday, with Chico sending right-hander Berek Fasking (0-2) to the mound...former big leaguer Ricardo Rodriguez will be making his Cracker Cats debut. Game time is 7:05pm ...hear all the action with Rory Miller calling the play-by-play beginning at 6:40pm on ESPN 101.7 FM or AM 1340. The broadcast will also be streamed live on the internet through the Outlaws official website, www.ChicoOutlawsBaseball.com.
