Snakes Take Sixth Straight in Sweep

Behind an all-around solid performance from the hitters, pitchers, and fielders the Calgary Vipers smashed the Edmonton Cracker-Cats 12-1 at Foothills Stadium in Calgary, Alberta. The hitters plated 12 runs on 12 hits, the pitchers held Edmonton to only one run, and the fielders did not commit an error. With the victory the Vipers have tied a franchise record with six consecutive wins and completed a four game sweep of the Cracker-Cats. For the fifth consecutive game Drew Miller hit a homerun and also extended his hitting streak to seven games. Dallas Mahan was solid as the Snakes starter going six innings and giving up only one earned run.

Calgary loaded the bases in the bottom of the first with walks to Darryl Brinkley, Jorge Mejia, and Colin Moro reaching on a fielder's choice sacrifice bunt. On the play Edmonton catcher Jordan Lundberg tried to throw out Brinkley at third base but Joe Jiannetti dropped the throw at third for an error. Drew Miller picked up a run batted in with a sacrifice fly to centerfield for the 1-0 advantage.

Right back came the Cracker-Cats in the next half inning when Josh Carter was hit by a pitch and Carlos Arroyo and Jordan Lundberg both picked up infield singles to load the bases. Kevin House cashed a run with a sacrifice fly and the game was tied at one. Mahan was able to educe a double play to end the inning giving up only the lone tally.

In the bottom of the inning designated hitter Felix Jose leadoff with his second homerun of the season to give the Vipers the lead for good at 2-1.

Mejia started off a long third inning with a walk and a steal of second base. Two strikeouts later, Jose Morban lined a clutch single for a run batted in. Morban stole second base as well and Patrick Arlis hit a groundball that third baseman Jiannetti threw away allowing Morban to score and the inning to continue. Jose followed and reached on a fielder's choice with Jiannetti unable to tag out Arlis at second base. Travis Drader doubled for an RBI and Jorge Tang singled home two more runs. Finally Brinkley singled in Tang to finish off the six run frame and put the Vipers up 8-1.

A lone run was added in the bottom of the sixth with a Miller double, Morban walk, Arlis infield single to load the bases and a Jose RBI groundout.

The Vipers finished off the scoring in the bottom of the seventh with a Tang walk and after moving up to third base on a groundout and throwing error he scored on a Colin Moro RBI single. Miller followed with his fifth homerun in as many games to make the score 12-1. Miller leads the team in RBI with 12, is hitting over .400 with an over .500 on base percentage and has been on base in all eight games so far.

Mahan (2-0) picked up the victory while Nick Peterson (0-1) received the loss. The bullpen was strong for the Snakes with Geoff Freeborn, Reggie Rivard, and Jon Huizinga combining for the final nine outs of the game allowing only one hit.

The defensive play of the game took place in the top of the fifth inning with Moro throwing out speedy Marcus Nettles at the plate with a perfect one bounce throw from centerfield.

The Vipers now head out on the road down to play the St. George RoadRunners starting Tuesday night at 7:05 PM (MDT) with Evan Greusel (1-0) making the start. Wednesday and Thursday at 7:05 PM (MDT) the two teams will also play with Nate Melek (0-0) and Reggie Rivard (0-0) toeing the rubber for Calgary. Friday and Saturday the Snakes take on the Yuma Scorpions at 8:00 PM (MDT) with Dallas Mahan (2-0) and Jordy Alexander (1-1) starting on the mound. Sunday at 7:00 PM (MDT) the three game series will wrap up with Evan Greusel (1-0) once again starting. All games can be heard live online at www.calgaryvipers.com.

Two teams never before seen in Calgary will then head in for the next home stand. The St. George Roadrunners with former Chicago White Sox infielder Liu Rodriguez will be here June 11, 12 and 13. Then the defending champion Chico Outlaws hit town. Friday, June 13th it's an afternoon "Skip out of Work" special so fans can watch both the Vipers and then the Stamps exhibition game. On Saturday June 14th it's Ripley's Believe It or Not Day at Foothills Stadium. A full contingent from the famous tourist attraction will be in Calgary to take possession of the 10 bats acquired in the Odom trade and to present the check to the Vipers Children's Charity. On Sunday, June 15th it's the Vipers Father's Day Extravaganza. Hall of Famer Gary Carter will be the Vipers special guest to throw out the first pitch and sign autographs. The Calgary Minor Softball Association will be holding their Opening ceremonies following the game and will be out in full force. The Vipers will be teaming with PharmaChoice Drug Stores and the Calgary Prostate Society to raise awareness for prostate cancer treatments.
