Chico Outlaws News Release
CHICO, CA - Derrick Loop delivered his second straight quality start of the young season, and backed by an 11-hit attack, Loop and the Chico Outlaws put an end to their season-opening five-game skid with an 8-3 victory over the Long Beach Armada Saturday night in front of an announced crowd of nearly 2,600 at Nettleton Stadium.
Loop started strong, striking out four of the first five Long Beach batters he faced. Meanwhile, the Outlaws staked him to an early lead as Julian Benavidez singled home Steve Boggs and Jose Valdez in the bottom of the 1st inning to put Chico up 2-0. Dave Parrish cut the Outlaws lead in half with a solo homer to lead off the Long Beach 3rd, but Chico got the run back in the bottom of the inning when Lino Garcia delivered a two-out RBI triple to plate Valdez to make the score 3-1. The Armada pulled to with a run when Tony Torcato singled home Steve Moss in the top of the 4th...but the Outlaws answered right back in the bottom of the 4th as Jesse Kovacs came through with another two-out hit - his bloop single to center knocked in Bryan Silverman to extend Chico's lead to 4-2.
While Loop kept Long Beach off the board in the 5th and 6th, the Outlaws put the contest away in the bottom of the 6th, sending 10 batters to the plate against Armada reliever Ryan Claypool and scoring four times - Valdez delivering the key blow with a two-run single; later in the frame Todd Gossage knocked in Benavidez with an opposite-field single to left to give Chico an 8-2 advantage. Long Beach scored a run off Outlaws reliever Berek Fasking in the 8th, but lefty Rob Ellis came in from the Chico bullpen to get the final three outs in the 9th to give the Outlaws a long-awaited victory.
Loop (1-0) allowed just two runs on five hits while striking out five in six-and-a-third innings to pick up the win...Currier (0-1) went just five innings in suffering the loss. Silverman had a 3-for-5 night to pace the Outlaws offense, while Boggs and Valdez chipped in with two hits apiece...the Armada had eight hits on the evening, with shortstop Pedro Montero going 2-for-3. Saturday's win improved Chico's season record to 1-5, while Long Beach slipped to 3-2 on the year. The two teams meet again Sunday in the rubber match of the three-game weekend set - righty Tyler Pearson (0-0) will be on the mound for the Outlaws, while Long Beach will throw former major league right-hander Jerome Williams (1-0). Game time is 6:05pm; hear all the action with Rory Miller calling the play-by-play beginning at 6:35pm on ESPN 101.7 FM or 1340 AM.
