Calgary Vipers News Release

With 15 hits and four homeruns the Calgary Vipers crushed the Chico Outlaws 14-3 at Foothills Stadium in Calgary, Alberta in front of the third largest crowd in Vipers history with 3118 fans in attendance. The Vipers fell behind 3-0 early but tied the game with three solo homeruns in the bottom of the second inning and added three more runs an inning later for a lead they never gave up. Calgary took the series with the Outlaws with back-to-back victories and improve their record to 13-6 on the season.

Chico got on the scoreboard right away in the top of the first inning as they loaded the bases with walks to Eric Pringle, Steve Boggs, and Casey Garrison. From there Todd Gossage hit a groundball for a run batted in that was bobbled by second baseman Jorge Mejia for a fielding error. Calgary pitcher Reggie Rivard issued his fourth free pass of the inning to Gabriel Riley with the bases loaded to make the score 2-0.

The Outlaws added a run in the top of the second inning on a Kevin McCarthy single, Pringle walk, and Bogg RBI base hit for the 3-0 lead.

Calgary responded in a big way in the bottom of the inning with three solo homeruns to tie the game. Felix Jose started it with his fifth, Patrick Arlis smacked his second in as many games, and Travis Drader knocked his first professional homerun over the wall to cap off the inning.

Three more runs were added by the Snakes in the bottom of the third inning started by singles from Jose Morban and Drew Miller. Jose picked up another RBI with a base hit, Nelson Castro cashed a run with a fielder's choice groundout, and Jorge Tang doubled for a RBI and the 6-3 advantage.

The Vipers exploded for six more tallies in the bottom of the sixth inning. Drader singled, moved to second base on a Jorge Mejia sacrifice bunt, and scored on a Darryl Brinkley RBI single. Calgary loaded the bases with an intentional walk to Morban and a hit by pitch of Miller. Jose plated a run with a fielder's choice groundout where the Outlaws were unable to get an out due to an error by second baseman Kevin McCarthy. Nelson Castro smacked a grand-slam for his second homerun of the year to push the lead to 12-3.

In the bottom of the seventh Brinkley walked, Morban singled, and Miller walked to load the bases again. Kevin Price was hit by a pitch for a tough RBI and Castro knocked in his sixth run of the game with a single for the 14-3 score.

Rivard (1-0) picked up his first win of the season thanks to five innings of work giving up three hits for two earned runs while striking out four. Ryan Olson, Robert Coello, and Jon Huizinga combined for the final four innings in relief and gave up only one hit for no runs and struck out three. Rudy Quinonez (0-4) was saddled with the loss.

The Vipers now head out on a six games in five days road trip to Chico, California and Reno, Nevada. Tuesday June 17th, Wednesday June 18th, and Thursday June 19th at 8:05 PM (MDT) the Snakes and Outlaws meet for a three game series.
