St. George RoadRunners News Release
EDMONTON - The St. George RoadRunners finished their first ever trip to Canada by dropping a 7-1 decision to the Edmonton Cracker Cats on Father's Day. The team finished with only one win in four contests above the 49th parallel.
St. George starter Shannon Sprouse struggled to keep the Cracker Cats off the scoreboard during his 4.1 innings of work.
Edmonton plated the first run of the game in the opening inning. LF Marcus Nettles singled off Sprouse and eventually stole second. After a sacrifice bunt moved him to third, Nettles would cross home on a Carlos Arroyo RBI-ground out.
The score moved to 3-0 after catcher John Pasieka homered to left field with Kevin House aboard. In the third, Sprouse walked Chris Van Rossum with the bases loaded and surrendered the fifth Cats run when Arroyo crossed home on a House fielder's choice.
The fifth would be Sporuse's final inning. He was responsible for two more runs scoring off Pasieka and Nettles RBI singles.
Sprouse (1-2) gave up seven runs, six earned, on six hits while walking five.
Billy Simon and Chris Hunter pitched the last 3.2 innings of the game. Simon, in his first relief stint, struck out two and allowed two hits over 2.2 innings. Hunter retired the side in the eighth in his first action since June 7.
Edmonton starter Phil Sobkow held the RoadRunners offense scoreless through seven innings. Sobkow (1-0) scattered just three hits, walked six and struck out four.
St. George plated their only run in the eighth inning off Cats' reliever Jake Upwood. Trever Dimick and Liu Rodriguez both walked. Brandon Taylor doubled off the right field wall scoring Dimick. Nick Peterson and Pete Sikaras shut down the 'Runners over the final 1.2 innings.
Taylor had the only multi-hit day for St. George, finishing with two doubles in three at-bats. The RoadRunners were held to only four hits, but had a lot of chances thanks to eight Cracker Cat walks. St. George stranded eight runners in the loss.
Edmonton and St. George split their 2008 series at three games a piece. The teams are not scheduled to meet for the remainder of the regular season.
The RoadRunners will continue their first road trip in Long Beach on Tuesday with a double-header scheduled with the Armada beginning at 1:05pm Pacific (2:05pm Mountain).
Both games of the double header can be heard on the RoadRunners Radio Network - Sports Radio 1210 and Network1Sports.com beginning at 12:45pm Pacific on Tuesday. John Potter will be live from Blair Field and will take your e-mails at RoadRunnersRadio@gmail.com.
