Calgary Vipers News Release

The Calgary Vipers set two new franchise records in their 29-5 drubbing of the Reno Silver Sox at Foothills Stadium in Calgary, Alberta. The 29 runs crushed the old runs in a game mark by 13 while the 22 hits also set a new record for hits in one game. Calgary also got a dominating pitching performance from starter Evan Greusel (9-3) who tossed six innings for his league high ninth victory. Greusel during the game posted five three-up, three-down innings and also struck out the side on only ten pitches in the second frame. To close out his start Greusel retired ten batters in a row and only allowed three hits in total for no earned runs while walking no one and striking out nine. The win snaps a three game losing streak and improves the Snakes to 16-20 in the second half of the season.

The Vipers opened the scoring in the bottom of the second inning with singles from Felix Jose and Darryl Brinkley and an intentional walk handed to Jorge Mejia to load the bases. Jorge Tang followed by knocking in two with a double off the centerfield wall and Travis Drader singled home another run for the 3-0 advantage.

Reno scratched across a run in the top of the third when Ben Wharton reached on a error by shortstop Tang, advanced to second base on a Brian Mason single, and scored an unearned run on a Gilbert Guilin run batted in base hit for the 3-1 score.

Calgary extended their lead in a huge way in the bottom of the inning with six runs for a 9-1 lead. Colin Moro was hit by a pitch, Carlos Duncan singled, and Jose walked to load the bases for the second straight inning. Brinkley knocked in two runs with a base hit, Mejia walked, and Tang knocked in another two runs in back-to-back frames with a base hit. Mejia came into score from third on a wild pitch as Billy Simon while intentionally walking Drader threw the ball away on the pitch out and finally Tang scored when Demond Smith bounced into a double-play to plate the sixth run.

In the bottom of the fourth frame Jose walked, Brinkley doubled him home, and Mejia plated Brinkley with a single for the double-digit lead at 11-1.

An inning later Calgary was back for more with a Patrick Arlis double, Moro single, and Duncan three run homerun for a 14-1 lead. It was Duncan's ninth homerun of the season.

Tang reached on a throwing error by third baseman Steven Alexander to start the bottom of the sixth inning and after a groundout to move him to third base he scored on a Demond Smith RBI fielder's choice for the 15-1 score.

Reno got a run back in the top of the seventh as Ross McCoy reached on a fielding error by shortstop Tang, took second base on a passed ball, and scored on a Wharton RBI singled for the 15-2 score.

Four more runs were scored by the Snakes in the bottom of the inning as Kevin Price was hit by a pitch and Mejia and Tang walked to load the bases. Drader stepped up and smacked a grand-slam for the new runs in a game record and the 19-2 advantage.

The Silver Sox scored three runs in the top of the eighth when Gilbert Guilin singled, Gary Harris reached on a fielder's choice, Doug Sanders singled, Matt Kavanaugh cashed a run with a double, and McCoy knocked in two more with another double for the 19-5 game.

Calgary exploded for ten runs in the bottom of the inning to cap off a historic night with a 29-5 lead. Duncan singled, Drew Miller walked, Price doubled in one, Mejia reached on a error by shortstop Andre Alvarado for a RBI, and Drader hit a three run blast for his second homerun in as many innings and his ninth of the season. Drader ended the night going three-for-six with the two homeruns and eight batted in. Smith hit a solo homerun later in the inning, Moro walked, Duncan doubled, Miller doubled in a run, and finally Tang singled home the final run of the game to also set a new record for hits in a game.
