Knoxville Smokies News Release
Sevierville, TN - Mark Holliman pitched eight innings of scoreless ball, and Chris Walker extended his hitting streak to nine games as the Tennessee Smokies blanked the Mobile BayBears 3-0 on Sunday afternoon. A crowd of 3,246 cheered the Smokies to their 2nd straight shutout at home.
The Smokies continued to swing a hot bat, with Issmael Salas jumping on the first pitch of the second inning and sending it over the left field wall. Jemel Spearman followed with a single up the middle, then was brought home on a two out base hit to right field by Holliman. The BayBears tried to answer in the third with three straight two-out singles, but Holliman was able to get out of the inning by striking out Ronnie Merrill on a change up.
In the sixth, Jake Fox singled to left with the help of a shattered bat. Jemel Spearman singled up the middle again, bringing home Fox from second base to expand the lead to 3-0. Chris Walker went 1-3 in the contest, extending his hitting streak to nine games.
That would be all the offense the Smokies would need, as Holliman shut down the BayBears through eight scoreless innings, giving up eight hits with no walks and six strikeouts. James Henderson came on in the ninth to pick up his 2nd save of the young season.
The Smokies and BayBears will play game three of the five game series on Monday night at 7:15 PM. The Smokies will go with right-hander Sean Gallagher (1-1) to face BayBears pitcher Jonathan Castellanos (0-2).
