Knoxville Smokies News Release

Sevierville, TN - The Tennessee Smokies needed a win today win take the five-game series from Chattanooga, and got the help they needed from Jake Fox. His two home runs helped the Smokies win a close 5-4 game in front of 5,985 screaming children from the surrounding area. The Smokies improved to 20-18 on the season, and kept at least a share of first place in the North Division.

Fox kept up his torrid pace today by smashing a home run in the first and third innings. His home run in the third was hit to dead center field, about 420 feet, and gave the Smokies a 3-0 lead. Fox has now hit four home runs in three consecutive games, and eight on the season.

Sean Gallagher (5-2) pitched three scoreless innings to begin the game, and then ran into trouble in the 4th. A double to right field by the Lookouts pitcher Carlos Fisher (1-1) tied the game at 3-3. The Smokies came back to take the lead in the bottom of the fifth on a Josh Kroeger RBI single, followed by an RBI double by Casey McGehee to give Tennessee a 5-3 lead.

After Chattanooga scored again in the top of the sixth to cut the lead to 5-4, manager Pat Listach decided to hand the game over to the bullpen. Billy Petrick came on to pitch two scoreless innings of relief, with Jim Henderson throwing a scoreless ninth to pick up his third save of the year. Henderson yielded one hit in the inning, but struck out the side to end the game.

The Smokies take to the road the rest of the week to face South Division leading Mississippi Braves in a five-game set. The Smokies will return home for five games against the Jacksonville Suns beginning on Wednesday May 23rd - Sunday May 27th.
