BayBears Take Wednesday Rain-Shortened Win

Mobile, Ala. - The Mobile BayBears used a seven-run third inning, which included Justin Upton's fourth Double-A homerun, as they defeated the Jacksonville Suns Wednesday afternoon 9-2 in six innings before heavy showers forced an early ending.

With the win Mobile improved to 20-20 overall while Jacksonville fell to 21-19 in 2007.

Jacksonville opened the scoring in the first inning when Xavier Paul drove home a run with a groundout to make it 1-0. The BayBears quickly answered in the bottom of the inning when Cesar Nicolas hit a sacrifice fly to score Emilio Bonifacio, tying the game at 1-1.

The Suns took another lead in the third inning when Xavier Paul doubled off of the wall to plate Chin-Lung Hu and give the Suns a 2-1 advantage.

Mobile then exploded in the bottom of the third inning with seven runs on seven hits, including homeruns from Justin Upton and Carlos Gonzalez to make it 8-2 BayBears. Other RBI in the third came on hits from Emilio Bonifacio, Jarred Ball and Cesar Nicolas.

The BayBears added another run in the fifth inning when pitcher Greg Smith hit his first career homerun, finishing the scoring at 9-2.

After the top of the sixth inning a heavy afternoon thunderstorm unloaded on Hank Aaron Stadium ending play and giving Mobile a 9-2 win.

Mobile starter Greg Smith (1-2) picked up the win while Jacksonville starter William Juarez (4-2) fell in the loss.

The Suns return to the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville Thursday to host the Carolina Mudcats (Marlins) at 7:05 p.m. It's Thursday Throwdown with Buds for a Buck all night.
