Mississippi Braves News Release
GREENVILLE, SC -- It was a warm, sunny afternoon Sunday at Greenville Municipal Stadium, but the Greenville Braves bats were put on ice by Tennessee Smokies pitching. Smokies starter Julio Villalon (2-0) went eight innings and allowed only three hits in leading his team to a 5-0 win over the G-Braves.
The Smokies jumped on G-Braves starter Chuck Smith (1-1) for two runs in the first inning. Skip Schumaker led off with a walk and came around to score on a Kevan Burns double to deep center. Bucky Jacobsen followed with a single up the middle that brought Burns around for a 2-0 lead. Tennessee tacked on another run in the top of the sixth on a Papo Bolivar RBI single and finished the scoring with a Corey Erickson solo homerun.
Smith allowed only three runs, two earned, on six hits over seven innings as he continues to recover from Tommy John's surgery. Ryan Langerhans extended his hitting streak to six games with a single in the sixth inning.
