JACKSONVILLE, Fla. â The Suns made the most of their three hits but it wasn't enough offense to beat the Orlando Rays in a 6-3 loss Sunday in front of 3,429 fans at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville.
Rays starter Jim Magrane (7-3) did not allow a hit until Suns shortstop Gookie Dawkins homered to left field with one out in the sixth inning. Magrane allowed two hits over seven innings to win his fourth game against Jacksonville this season.
Dawkins had two of the three hits for the Suns (32-42 overall, 1-4 second half).
Suns starter Heath Totten (3-9) loaded the bases three times, getting out of the first two jams by allowing one run each in the second and fifth innings. But in the sixth, the Rays (34-40, 2-3) made him pay. Jesus Feliciano, who played with the Suns earlier in the season, blooped a single to center to score Frank Moore. Danny Massiatte's two-run double to left gave Orlando a 5-0 lead. Totten, who hasn't won since May 2, lost for his fifth consecutive start.
Greg Bauer, on in relief for Totten, allowed a sacrifice fly to Dan DeMent that scored Feliciano which gave the Rays a 6-0 lead. After Dawkins' home run, the Suns scored twice off Magrane in the seventh. Tarrik Brock scored from first on Brennan King's double and was aided by left fielder Jonny Gomes' bobble. Reggie Abercrombie later scored King on a groundout.
Evan Rust pitched a scoreless ninth to record his 11th save for Orlando, which has won nine of 13 games vs. Jacksonville this season.
Right-hander Edwin Jackson (3-5, 2.91 ERA) is scheduled to face Rays righty Scott Autrey (no record) at 7:05 p.m. Monday at the Baseball Grounds. Jackson is the league's youngest player. Autrey was promoted from Class A Charleston (S.C.) to make his first start with the Rays.
