
BayBears stay hot in series opener

Mobile, Ala. â The Mobile BayBears remained red hot in the second half as they won their series opener against Birmingham, 6-2. The BayBears improved their second half mark to 5-0, defeating the Barons in front of 2,530 fans in their first game home of the half. Steve Watkins earned the win with another strong outing. Watkins (5-4) threw seven innings, giving up only one run on five hits while striking out eight.
The BayBears jumped on Barons' starter Jim Bullard in the second inning. Humberto Quintero drove in two runs with a two-out double to left. Then, after Todd Donovan walked and Bobby Scales beat out an infield single, Jake Gautreau beat out an infield single as well. Two runners scored on the play, as Donovan scored from second with a great slide at the plate.
Danny Bravo made it a 5-0 game as he drove in Jon Knott with a two-out double down the right field line. The BayBears scored an unearned run in the sixth. Jon Benick reached on a two-base error by left fielder Juan Piniella and scored as Donovan lined a single to left.
Birmingham scored single runs in the seventh and eighth innings. Darron Ingram hit a solo homerun off of Watkins in the seventh and Danny Sandoval drove in Piniella with a single in the eighth.
The BayBears and Barons will play game two of their three-game series Monday night at 7:05. RHP Chris Rojas (3-5; 5.76) will get the start for Mobile against Birmingham's LHP Neal Cotts (7-2; 2.11).
