Smokies Split Doubleheader Series Finale in Madison

Knoxville Smokies News Release

Madison, Ala. - The Tennessee Smokies (25-20) split a doubleheader against the Rocket City Trash Pandas (27-18) on Sunday afternoon, winning by a score of 7-4 in game one, and losing by a score of 3-2 in game two.

Home runs were the story of game one as the Smokies capitalized off of four swings from Alexander Canario, Bradlee Beesley, Levi Jordan, and Chase Strumpf. All seven of the Smokies' runs came off of homers to run their Southern League-leading count to 66.

The Smokies were able to get back to their winning ways alongside a strong pitching performance from starter RHP Peyton Remy, RHP Graham Lawson, and LHP Bailey Horn (W, 1-0) who shut down any comeback attempt from the Trash Pandas to secure a 7-4 win in game one.

In game two, the offense came to a halt for both sides, as late defensive mistakes from the Smokies gave Rocket City the advantage. Following a second-inning solo homer from Rocket City's Preston Palmeiro, The Smokies took a late lead and plated both of their runs three innings later in the fifth from a line-drive two-RBI single from Darius Hill.

The Smokies' game two starter LHP Dalton Staumbaugh was excellent in his first career double-A start as he was able to go five innings, struck out four, and allowed just two earned runs. He walked three including the tying run when he walked Tori Hunter Jr. in the 5th to run things even. Reliever Scott Kobos (L, 1-1) would get the loss in this one as after walking Orlando Martinez, Preston Palmeiro would single to bring him home.

The Smokies will be back in action at Smokies Stadium on Tuesday, May 31 when they open a six-game homestand with the Birmingham Barons. The Smokies will celebrate Elvis Night on Friday, June 3 and Margaritaville Night on Saturday, June 4. For tickets, fans can call the box office at (865) 286-2300 or visit smokiesbaseball.com.
