Knoxville Smokies News Release

MADISON, AL - Playing for the first time in eight days, the Tennessee Smokies (42-54) lost to the Rocket City Trash Pandas (51-48), 9-0, Thursday night at Toyota Field. Rocket City broke the game open with a six run fourth inning in the series opening win.

The Smokies hadn't played a game since Wednesday, August 25th in Chattanooga. The final four games against the Lookouts and the first two games against the Trash Pandas were canceled to allow for additional testing and contact tracing following a positive COVID-19 test.

The Smokies had a chance to score in the top of the first inning after Carlos Sepulveda and Christopher Morel opened the game with back-to-back singles. With two-outs, Grayson Byrd hit a single into left field, but Morel was thrown out at third before Sepulveda crossed home plate to keep the game scoreless.

The Trash Pandas scored their first two runs on a Ray-Patrick Didder home run and an error in the first. Rocket City broke the game open by scoring six times in the fourth. Livan Soto's RBI single extended the lead to 3-0. Luis Aviles Jr followed with a two-run triple, then scored on Didder's RBI single. David MacKinnon's two-run home run put Rocket City in front 8-0. Mitch Nay's solo home run in the seventh rounded out the scoring at 9-0.

Javier Assad (L, 4-8) took the loss, he was charged with eight runs (four earned) on seven hits in just 3.2 innings pitched. Bryan Hudson worked 2.1 scoreless innings and Scott Kobos tossed a scoreless eighth in relief. Morel led the way offensively, finishing 3-for-4.

The Smokies and Trash Pandas will continue their four game series from Toyota Field Friday night. First pitch between RHP Ryan Jensen (0-0, 6.75) and RHP Davis Daniel (1-3, 2.63) is scheduled for 7:35 PM ET.
