Knoxville Smokies News Release
Sevierville, Tenn. - The Tennessee Smokies (2-0) beat the Jacksonville Suns (0-2) behind strong pitching and some timely hitting Wednesday afternoon at Smokies Park. Jeremy Cummings (7-6) went five strong innings only allowing two hits and one run, and four Smokies relievers combined to shut down the Suns bats for the final four innings.
Suns starter Alfredo Gonzalez (2-3) allowed five runs over four innings and was tagged with the loss.
The Smokies fell behind 1-0 in the first, but responded with a two-run home run by Kevan Burns in the bottom of the inning. Skip Schumaker, Caonabo Cosme, and Bucky Jacobsen each added an RBI in the fifth to extend the lead to 5-1. Burns' home run was his second in two days and his third for the season.
The Suns added one run in the ninth by loading the bases against Mike Lyons, but Jeremy Lambert recorded the final three outs to pick up his second save of the year.
The Smokies will host the Suns Friday night at 7:15 for the third of four games. Rick Ankiel (1-4, 8.91) will face Jacksonville's ace Joel Hanrahan (6-3, 2.38) as the Smokies try to start the second half with three straight wins.
