HOOVER, Ala. - The Tennessee Smokies (14-19) brought the tying run to bat in the top of the ninth inning, but amidst a driving rainstorm their rally fell short in a 6-3 setback against the Birmingham Barons on Tuesday night at Regions Park.
With Trey McNutt on the mound in the middle contest of a five-game series, Birmingham built up a four-run lead through the first three innings. In the bottom of the second, the Barons opened the scoring on an RBI single by Justin Green before they took a 2-0 advantage when an unearned run scored on an error by Bour. A two-run homer off the bat of Andy Wilkins in the third gave the Barons a 4-0 edge.
Bour would make up for his earlier miscue by lining a two-run homer off the batters' eye in center field in the fourth inning following a leadoff double by Jae-Hoon Ha to cut the Tennessee deficit to 4-2.
The Barons (18-15) got a run back in the fourth when Tyler Saladino walked with one out and scored two batters later on an RBI single off the bat of Seth Loman to make it a 5-2 contest.
In the eighth, Luis Flores ripped an RBI double to pull the Smokies within two at 5-3, but the Barons would once again answer. In the bottom of the frame, Casey Weathers entered out of the Tennessee bullpen and walked leadoff hitter Tyler Saladino, who then stole second and later scored on a wild pitch to put the Barons ahead, 6-3.
The Smokies threatened in the top of the ninth. With one out, Ha and Rebel Ridling collected back-to-back singles, but Dan Remenowsky retired the next two batters as lighting crackled around the ballpark to close the door and preserve the Birmingham win.
Barons starter Pedro Hernandez (4-1) pitched six strong innings, allowing two runs on seven hits to earn the win while Remenowsky notched his second save of the series. McNutt (0-3) yielded four runs (three earned) on five hits over three frames while taking the loss.
Flores finished 3-for-4 in the loss while Ha and Jim Adduci each collected two hits.
The Smokies and Barons continue their five-game series on Wednesday afternoon at 12:05 p.m. ET when Tennessee sends right-hander Dallas Beeler (0-1, 3.62 ERA) to the mound against Birmingham righty Simon castro (2-1, 4.26) at Regions Park.
