Knoxville Smokies News Release
Greenville, SC- The Greenville Braves (4-12, 40-44) parlayed a pair of Tennessee errors into a three run fifth inning and held on for a series opening 5-3 win over the Smokies Friday night at Municipal Stadium. Tennessee (13-3, 48-38) had won seven straight over the G-Braves.
Tennessee opened the scoring after Skip Schumaker led off with a double and scored two batters later on a Caonabo Cosme sacrifice fly.
Greenville scored twice on Rhett Parrott (6-8) in the third inning. Parrott walked Ramon Castro and Lee Evans followed with a single. James Jurries scored both with a double to right field.
Consecutive one-out singles from Jason Fitzgerald, James Jurries, and Langerhans chased Parrott in the fifth. Josh Axelson took over and fielded a swinging bunt single from Richard Lewis, but threw wide of the plate, scoring both Fitzgerald and Jurries. Catcher Dan Moylan chased down the loose ball and threw wide of the plate to score Langerhans on the second error of the play.
Tennessee rallied with single runs in the seventh and eight innings but couldn't solve closer Billy Sylvester (S, 7). Al Benjamin homered leading off the seventh against Roman Colon, while Bucky Jacobsen doubled home John Nelson against Colon in the eighth. Sylvester, who hasn't allowed a hit to Tennessee this season, retired the final four batters he faced.
Greenville reliever Kevin Barry (3-3) worked 2 2/3 scoreless innings for the sin.
The series continues Saturday night in Greenville with Chris Narveson (0-0, 0.00) starting for the Smokies opposite Adam Wainright (5-6, 3.56).
