Magrane, German Power Rays past Mudcats

July 4, 2003 - Southern League (SL1)
Orlando Rays News Release

Zebulon, NC – Amado German's solo home run in the seventh inning was all the offense Orlando would need, as the Rays squeezed past the Carolina Mudcats 1-0 in Southern League action at Five County Stadium Friday night.

Orlando Starting pitcher Jim Magrane earned his team-leading 8th win of the season after blanking the Southern League's top offense for eight innings, holding the Mudcats to just four hits and one walk. Relievers Derek Andersen and Josh Parker tossed a scoreless ninth, with Parker earning his first Double-A save after closing out the ninth. B.J. Barns and Jesus Feliciano each went 2-4 with a double for the Rays, who have won four of their last six and improved to 6-10 on the second half of the season.

Orlando and Carolina square off again tomorrow at 7:15 in game two of the three game series. With Orlando coming off back-to-back doubleheaders on Wednesday and Thursday, the Rays will turn to RHP Travis Minix (2-1, 3.60) to make a spot start out of the bullpen. Carolina will counter with RHP Danny Bautista (2-0, 0.00).

Following the three-game series with the Mudcats most of the Rays will enjoy a few days off, as the Southern League All-Star break starts Monday. Orlando will send three representatives – all starting pitchers - to the game: RHP Jim Magrane, RHP Jose Veras and LHP Jon Switzer.
