ONEONTA, NY --- The Vermont Expos losing streak reached 11 games with an 8-2 loss to the Oneonta Tigers Thursday night at Damaschke Park in New York-Penn League action.
The Expos scored single runs in the second and third innings, while Oneonta scored two runs in the bottom of the second inning for a 2-2 tie.
Oneonta took the lead for good with two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning off Vermont starter Anthony Pearson (0-3), who allowed four runs (three earned) on four hits with four walks and five strikeouts over six innings for the loss.
The Tigers then broke the game open with four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning off of reliever Brett Reid, who allowed all four runs on four hits in just 0.2 innings. Joe Maruffi took over for Reid and tossed 1.1 scoreless innings with one strikeout.
Franklyn Jimenez went 3-for-5 with one double as Vermont finished the game outhitting Oneonta 9-8. David Lutz was 2-for-3 with an RBI double, while Tim Sweeney added an RBI single.
The loss leaves Vermont just three losses shy of the club record 14-game losing streak in 2001. The loss also marked the sixth straight night in the Vermont dugout at Centennial Field for Expos General Manager C.J. Knudsen, who has been joined the past few nights by different members of the Vermont front office. They will continue to spend the night sleeping in the dugout until the Expos (1-16) win another game.
Vermont will try and pick up that win on Friday afternoon (4:00 p.m.) as the Expos wrap up the quick two-game roadtrip at Oneonta with Nick Long on the mound for Vermont. The Expos will return home to Centennial Field on Saturday night to begin a six-game homestand.
