Zebulon, NC - Scott Krause broke a scoreless tie with a solo home run in the fifth inning and Tennessee (29-22) picked up a game on Carolina (30-19) with a 3-1 win Tuesday night at Five County Stadium. The Smokies are two games out of first with three games remaining in the series and 11 left in the first half against the first place Mudcats.
Tennessee starter Josh Pearce (1-0) earned his first win of the season by striking out 8 and scattering seven hits and one run over 7 1/3 innings. Pearce left the game after being struck by a line drive in the eighth inning. Mike Lyons worked the final 1 1/3 innings to earn his league leading 17th save.
Krause hit the first pitch of the fifth inning from Aaron Small (2-1) off the scoreboard in left field to give the Smokies a lead they wouldn't surrender. Papo Bolivar doubled home Bucky Jacobsen with an insurance run in the 8th before the Mudcats answered.
Drew Niles sent a line drive up the middle in the 8th that knocked Pearce out of the game. Juan Pena got Matt Padgett to fly out to left and was replaced by Lyons. Marlins' top prospect Miguel Cabrera doubled off Lyons to score Niles for the final tally.
