Smokies Lose Game Three to Barons

SEVIERVILLE, TN - The Tennessee Smokies lost the third game of a five-game series against the Birmingham Barons on Friday night at Smokies Stadium. Birmingham jumped out to an early lead and the Smokies were never able to catch up in the 5-4 loss.

Birmingham got off to a fast start with a two-run home run in the top of the first inning. The Smokies answered in the bottom of the first inning when Yasiel Balaguert singled and Zack Short scored to make it a 2-1 game. A sacrifice fly for the Barons in the fourth inning gave them a 3-1 lead. Carlos Penalver singled home Jesse Hodges in the bottom of the fifth inning to get the Smokies back within one run.

Birmingham erased that run in the sixth inning on an RBI-single and an RBI-double to make it 5-2 Barons. Erick Castillo singled in Eddy Martinez in the seventh inning to pull the Smokies within 5-3. Jason Vosler grounded into a double play that scored Jeffrey Baez, but Tennessee could not get any more runs across in the 5-4 loss.

Right handed pitcher Thomas Hatch started on the mound for the Smokies. Hatch pitched 4.1 innings, giving up three runs on seven hits and four walks. He also added three strikeouts. Hatch was relieved by Zach Hedges in the fifth. Hedges threw 3.2 innings, allowing two runs on five hits. James Pugliese pitched a scoreless ninth inning.

Tennessee and Birmingham will play the fourth game of the series tomorrow night at 7:00 p.m. Oscar De La Cruz (2-3, 7.48 ERA) is going to start on the mound for the Smokies and the Barons will go with Jordan Guerrero (1-2, 7.08 ERA). De La Cruz is coming off a win against Chattanooga in his last start where he pitched 7.0 innings and gave up just four hits.

Saturday will be the first post-game fireworks show of the season as part of the Summer Fireworks Series presented by Coors Light and Pepsi. Gates will open at 5:30 p.m.
