Pensacola Blue Wahoos News Release
Pensacola, Fla. - Touki Toussaint (W, 2-1) showed Friday's sellout crowd why he was worthy of the 16th overall pick in the 2014 MLB Draft. Atlanta's highly-touted prospect struck out a season-high 10 Wahoos as the M-Braves defeated the Wahoos 9-2 at Blue Wahoos Stadium.
Two destructive innings cost Pensacola a chance at a series-clinching win. Jesus Reyes (L, 0-5) allowed four runs in the fourth inning after Tyler Neslony's run-scoring single and Travis Demeritte's two-run triple gave Mississippi a 3-0 lead. Demeritte later scored on a flare from Toussaint, who finished the night 2-for-3 with two runs driven in.
In the sixth, Pensacola paid the price for more defensive miscues. With two men on, Connor Lien grounded a ball past Taylor Sparks to bring home Alex Jackson. After another Toussaint single, Luis Valenzuela doubled home another M-Brave run to make it 6-0. With two outs, Austin Riley hit a fly ball to left that was mishandled by Nick Longhi, which was ruled a three-base error. Mississippi scored five runs in the inning, and of their nine runs only five were earned.
There were several positives for the Wahoos in Friday's defeat. C.J. McElroy finished the night 2-for-2 with two walks. Shed Long continued his offensive production with an RBI-single in the eighth, while Josh VanMeter recorded his first multi-hit game since April 22. Juan Martinez, who was promoted from Daytona earlier in the day, made his debut and delivered two scoreless innings for the Wahoos, which included some heads-up defense to help turn a double-play in the eighth.
The Blue Wahoos will send Vladimir Gutierrez (0-4, 5.14) to the hill in Saturday's tilt against Mississippi. The M-Braves will counter with southpaw pitcher, Wes Parsons (0-2, 2.20), who is winless in five starts this year. First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 p.m. and will be broadcasted live on BlabTV. Radio coverage can be found on 97.1 The Ticket and www.bluewahoos.com.
