Smokies Lose Both Games in Doubleheader

MOBILE - Tennessee starter Corey Black allowed a career worst four home runs over three and 1/3 innings and the Smokies fell to the BayBears 8-1 in game one of a doubleheader in Mobile on Friday evening.

Black (5-7, 3.18) allowed a home run in the Mobile (26-18, 69-45) first to former Tennessee (24-22) infielder Nate Samson and the BayBears took a 1-0 lead.

Samson's home run was his first of two in the game and the first of four allowed by Black. Opposing starter Aaron Blair (3-1, 3.09) hit a solo shot in the third and Samson would do the same two batters later. Jon Griffin homered for Mobile in the fourth. It was his 15th this season and his sixth this year against Tennessee.

The BayBears led 1-0 after two, but the Smokies tied the game with a run batted in single from Charlie Cutler. Cutler's run scoring hit brought in Albert Almora, but that would be the only run of the game for Tennessee.

The 1-1 tie did not last long as the BayBears rallied for two on the home runs hit by Blair and Samson. Blair's homer was a solo blast that came on a 1-2 pitch from Black. Samson's came two batters later and on a 1-0 offering.

Mobile led 3-1 after three, but scored five times in the fourth on just three hits to extend the lead to 8-1. Griffin led off the inning with a solo homer to stretch the lead to 4-1. Black then hit catcher Mike Thomas with a pitch and while facing Taylor Harbin threw a wild pitch that allowed Thomas to second. Black eventually got Harbin to fly out, but was then pulled from the game.

Black left with a man at second and one out in the fourth. He allowed five runs on six hits over three and 1/3 innings and took the loss. Black also walked one and did not record a strikeout in the loss.

Matt Loosen pitched the final two outs of the fourth, and would allow his one inherited runner to score. Loosen gave up two hits in the inning, including a two-run single to Ryan Court.

Loosen left after the fourth and Lendy Castillo would finish the game by pitching the final two innings. Castillo walked one and gave up two hits over two scoreless innings.

Blair scattered five hits and gave up just one run over five full innings and got the win. The Mobile starter also walked three and struck out three.

Relievers Seth Simmons and Alex Sogard pitched the final two innings in the seven inning game. Simmons struck out one and did not allow a hit. Sogard retired the side in order with three groundouts in the seventh.

GAME TWO: Early Deficit Too Much For Smokies in 4-1 Loss

MOBILE - Tennessee starter C.J. Edwards allowed three runs in the first and the Tennessee offense managed just one run against Mobile's A.J. Schugel as the BayBears finished the sweep of Friday's doubleheader with a 4-1 win in Mobile on Friday night.

The loss was Tennessee's second of the night as they dropped game 1 of the doubleheader 8-1. The Smokies (24-23, 57-59) had won three straight before losing both games on Friday.

The BayBears (27-18, 69-45) lost the series opener on Wednesday night, but after Thursday's rain out, would take both games on Friday at Hank Aaron Stadium in Mobile.

Schugel (5-2, 3.43) allowed a run on six hits and struck out five in the victory.

Edwards (1-1, 3.21) in his second start back from the disabled list allowed three runs on three hits over four innings. Edwards threw 63 pitches, faced 18 batters and struck out five. He also walked two, retired one via a groundout and four via flyout.

The three run Mobile first featured a leadoff triple from Tom Belza and a two-run single from Gerson Montilla. Edwards also hit a batter and walked one in the inning.

The BayBears led 3-0 after the first and would not score again until getting a run against Tennessee reliever Hunter Cervenka in the fifth. Cervenka gave up a one-out walk to Nate Samson and then a run scoring double to Brandon Drury. Drury also had a run scoring sacrifice fly in the three run first.

Cervenka followed Edwards after he left the game after the fourth. The Tennessee left-hander gave up a run and one hit over two innings. Cervenka also struck out one and walked one in his appearance.

Schugel pitched through the fifth and earned the win. He was followed by relievers RJ Hively and Kaleb Fleck who pitched the sixth and seventh respectively. Hively gave up one hit and struck out one in a scoreless sixth. Fleck worked the seventh in the shortened game and earned the save. He allowed a hit and struck out two while earning his 15th save of the season.

Tennessee stranded five men on base in the loss and were 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position. Mobile stranded three and were 1-for-4 with runners in scoring position in the victory.

Lars Anderson, Dustin Geiger and Luis Flores were all 2-for-3 in the loss. Geiger doubled twice and Flores scored the only run of the game for Tennessee. He scored in the fifth after Pin-Chieh Chen grounded out to first after Flores went to third on a double from Geiger.
