Birmingham, AL - The Birmingham Barons extended their season-worst losing streak to six games Thursday, falling to the Huntsville Stars by a score of 6-3 in front of 7,038 fans at Regions Field and a national TV audience as part of the CBS Sports Network's Game of the Week.
The Barons jumped out to an early 1-0 lead on a solo home run by Kevan Smith against Huntsville starter JacobBarnes. The homer was Smith's ninth of the season. However it would be the lone run scored against Barnes who held the Barons to just four hits over 7.0 IP.
Barons starter Mike Recchia cruised through the first four innings but ran into trouble in the fifth, allowing an RBI triple to Yadiel Rivera and an RBI single by Nick Shaw giving the Stars a 2-1 lead. Recchia finished with eight hits allowed and four strikeouts over 6.0 IP.
The Stars tacked on a key insurance run in the seventh against reliever Jefferson Olacio on another RBI hit by NickShaw.
Josh Richmond cut the Stars lead to 3-2 in the eighth with a solo home run against reliever Greg Holle. It was also his ninth homer of the year.
The Barons rallied to tie the game at 3-3 in the ninth starting with a leadoff double by Rangel Ravelo. He advanced to third on a ground out setting the table for Chris Curley's two-out RBI single to center against Southern League saves leader David Goforth.
However, Huntsville would re-establish the lead for good scoring three runs in the top of the 11th inning against reliever Nestor Molina (6-4, 4.76) highlighted by a two-run double by Nick Shaw to take a 6-3 lead they would not relinquish.
Dan Black, Ravelo and Smith each finished with two hits apiece as the Barons fell to 51-65 on the year and 22-24 in the second half while Huntsville improved to 68-49 overall and 22-25 in the second half.
The Barons will look to snap their losing skid tomorrow night as RHP Bryan Blough (2-3, 3.39) takes the hill against LHP Jed Bradley (4-6, 4.55). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM CDT.
