Knoxville Smokies News Release

SEVIERVILLE, TN - The Smokies fell on Sunday afternoon to the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp 11-5. The Smokies fell behind early, giving up seven runs in the first two innings and were never able to recover.

After giving up two runs in the first inning on Saturday night, the Smokies fell victim to the first again. Duncan Robinson got the start for the Smokies and barely made it out of the first inning as he gave up five runs and faced 10 batters. Robinson settled down after giving up three more runs in the second inning, pitching a scoreless third and fourth. Robinson finished the game going four innings, allowing seven runs on eight hits and striking out four.

The Smokies offense attempted to make a comeback after the early seven runs. In the second, after two quick outs, Trey Martin walked and Jesse Hodges singled. That brought up Jeffrey Baez who continued his hot start to the season as he doubled in both runners to make it 7-2.

Preston Morrison replaced Robinson after the fourth inning in his fifth appearance of the season. Jacksonville got to Morrison and scored two runs off of him in the sixth to increase their lead to 9-2.

Baez continued his red-hot performance in the bottom of the fifth as he hit his fourth home run of the season, a solo one to cut the lead to six. But, the Jumbo Shrimp got to Morrison again in the sixth as they scored two more before Morrison was replaced. Morrison finished the game going two innings, allowing four runs on six hits.

Daury Torrez came in the game after Morrison and pitched three innings, allowing three hits, no runs and struck out three. His outing lowered his ERA to 0.87.

The Smokies tried to rally in the ninth down 11-3, but the deficit was too much. In the ninth, Trey Martin singled, he went 3-3 in the game, Jesse Hodges singled and then Baez continued his fantastic game doubling in two more runs. Baez finished the game going 3-4 with five RBI. That was all the Smokies could muster though as they took the 11-5 loss.

The Smokies will be back in action on Monday evening as they take on Jacksonville in game three of the series. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m. Thomas Hatch is the projected starter for the Smokies in the game while the Jumbo Shrimp will counter with Max Duval. It will be a Dollar Dog Night, presented by Toyota Knoxville.
