Charlotte Checkers News Release

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Charlotte Checkers announced that Kenton Smith has been selected as a nominee for the 2007 InterContinental Hotels Group Ironman Award. The 2007 nomination is Smith's second-consecutive nomination. Smith, one of the team's alternate captains, skated in all 72 regular season games during the 2006-2007 season earning 29 points (9g, 23a).

The ICHG Ironman Award is presented annually to a Professional Hockey Players' Association (PHPA) Member playing in the American Hockey League and a Member playing in the ECHL, respectively, who has participated in each of his Club's regular season games and has contributed both offensively and defensively throughout the 2006-2007 regular season.

Nominations are based on individual player performance, with primary consideration placed on games played, points, and plus/minus statistics. A committee comprised of PHPA officials will announce the winners at the PHPA Annual Meeting of Player Representatives in June.

Smith, a defenseman, finished the season with a plus-minus rating of plus 12, 82 penalty minutes and was the only Charlotte player to play in all 72 regular season games.

For more information, contact Darryl Dionne, Director of Communications and Business Development for the PHPA at (905) 682-4800.

The Checkers enter their 15th season of play as a member of the ECHL in October 2007. In the team's 14-year history, the Checkers have made the playoffs 10 times including three-consecutive playoff appearances to date. The Checkers will enter their third season of play at St. Lawrence Homes Home Ice at Charlotte Bobcats Arena this fall. Season tickets are on sale now with full-season packages starting at just $399.
