Smith Nets Two as Tips Roll Past Americans 8-2

KENNEWICK, Wash. - Hayden Smith potted a pair of goals to help lead the Everett Silvertips past the Tri-City Americans 8-2 at the Toyota Center Wednesday night.

Julius Miettinen opened the scoring 12:27 into the first period, followed up at 16:11 by Cade Zaplitny for a 2-0 lead after one. Goals came in rapid succession in the second period, with Carter Bear wiring a wrist shot at 7:54 and Austin Roest tapping in a loose puck at 9:31. Hayden Smith buried a rebound just 57 seconds later for a 5-0 lead, chasing Lukas Matecha from the Tri-City net in favor of Kyle Kelsey.

Smith's second of the game came shorthanded at 4:47 in the third period, converting a breakaway after a steal in the defensive zone. Lukas Kaplan and Beau Courtney added goals to round out scoring in the 8-2 rout.

Tyler Palmer stopped 14 of 16 in the win, his 20th of the season.

The Silvertips improved to 32-15-3 with the win. Their 67 points top the Western Conference.
