Charleston Swamp Foxes News Release

NORTH CHARLESTON, SC – Defensive specialist Demont Smith has been named both the Fox Hole Fan Club and Swamp Foxes' player of the week for his efforts on April 19 in Cincinnati.

Smith, a 6-0, 195-pound veteran from Michigan State, led the Swamp Foxes' defensive effort in the loss to the Swarm. In front of approximately 14 family members in southern Ohio, Smith led the team in total tackles for the second-consecutive week, tallying six, including four solo stops.

His highlight, however, were three interceptions in the game, setting a personal and a Swamp Foxes' single-game record. Smith has picked off four passes this season, doubling his career total to eight. His efforts have moved him into second on the Swamp Foxes' all-time career interception list despite only having seen action in seven games as a Swamp Fox. Current teammate Michael Brown sits atop the career list with 18 career interceptions, two this season.

Smith currently ranks second in arenafootball2 in interceptions with four and is tied for fifth in passes defended with eight total. The Swamp Foxes' defensive unit currently ranks first in af2 in total defense, only surrendering 156.7 yards per game. Behind the efforts of Smith and Brown, the defense ranks second against the pass, third in pass defense rating, and third in scoring defense.

The Swamp Foxes open its 2003 home season this Saturday, April 26 at 7:30 pm at the North Charleston Coliseum. Charleston will host the Birmingham Steeldogs for the first-time in the teams' four-year histories. The festivities kickoff at 5:00 pm at the tailgate zone, which features balloons, face painting, and live music from the Travis Allison Band.
