April 22, 2003 - arenafootball2 (af2) News Release
CHICAGO - Arkansas quarterback RICKY HERBERT, Peoria wide receiver/defensive back DAVAREN HIGHTOWER and Wichita defensive specialist LEE VAUGHN have been named Offensive Player, Ironman and ADT Defensive Player of the Week, respectively, for Week 4 of the 2003 season.
OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Herbert (6-1, 210, American International), in his third season, returned to his 2002 form last weekend, completing 28 passes for 327 yards (2nd highest total of 2003) and seven touchdowns to lead the Twisters past the Riptde 51-43 and give Arkansas (1-2) its first win of the season. Herbert also rushed for a score in the game. His seven passing touchdowns doubled his season total (14) and was the most in a single game since July 12 of last season, when he threw for nine against the Hawaiian Islanders. Herbert, who led the league with 85 passing touchdowns last season, now has 165 for his career and is four shy of breaking the all-time mark (168 - Bob Bees, Richmond 2000-02). This is the second Offensive Player of the Week award for Herbert in his career, as he also won the honor in Week 13 of last season.
IRONMAN OF THE WEEK
Hightower (6-1, 220, Arizona State), a rookie, exploded for three consecutive touchdowns in a 4:36 span during the second and third quarters of last week's game against Columbus, extending the Pirates lead from 20-9 to 40-9 and putting the game out of reach for the formerly unbeaten Wardogs. For the game, Hightower had six receptions for 89 yards with two touchdowns and one interception that he returned 51 yards for a score (2nd longest interception return of the season). He also made two solo tackles, helping the Pirates' defense hold the Wardogs to their lowest scoring effort in team history. This is Hightower's first Ironman of the Week award.
ADT DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Vaughn (5-1, 185, Wyoming), a rookie, led an outstanding defensive effort for the Stealth, helping to hold the Green Bay Blizzard to 26 points. In the game, Vaughn tallied nine solo tackles (League high for Week 4), two interceptions and five passes defended (2nd highest for Week 4). His nine tackles matched a team record held by MICHAEL SEAHORN, who equaled the mark twice in the 2001 season. This is Griffith's first ADT Defensive Player of the Week award.
