Slowey helps Ft. Myers blank Tampa 3-0
June 6, 2006 - Florida State League (FSL1)
Fort Myers Mighty Mussels News Release
FORT MYERS, FL (June 6, 2006) - Those people into numbers enjoyed 6/6/06 because of what it stood for. Those weren't the numbers that concerned Kevin Slowey, however, on Tuesday night at Hammond Stadium as he blanked the Tampa Yankees 3-0.
The numbers that were important to Slowey on Tuesday night were zero (the amount of runs Slowey allowed), 1.19 (his ERA after tossing 8.0 shutout innings on a four hit gem while striking out five) and three (the number of wins Slowey now has after earning eight no decisions this season despite having the best ERA in the FSL). Slowey was masterful once again allowing just one runner to reach second base, P.J. Pilittere's double with two out in the second. The only other hits Slowey allowed was a one out single to Luis Nunez in the third, a lead off single to Pilittere in the fifth and a lead off single to Hector Made in the eighth. He threw 97 pitches, 72 for strikes and never got into any serious trouble. For the ninth time in 12 starts he didn't walk a batter and now has just five walks and 87 strikeouts this season.
The offense gave him all the support he needed in the first, a rarity for Slowey this season. With one out Garrett Guzman walked. He moved to second on a ground out by Matt Tolbert and scored on a single from Brock Peterson.
The Miracle, who improved to 33-25, tacked on two more runs in the third when Alexi Casilla reached on an infield single and went to second on a throwing error by shortstop Ramiro Pena. He moved to third on a ground out by Guzman and scored on Tolbert's single to center. Tolbert advanced to third on Peterson's single and then scored on a wild pitch. Tolbert and Peterson both finished the night 2-4.
Yankee starter Alan Horne pitched well going 7.0 innings allowing three runs on six hits while walking three and striking out six, but was out dueled by Slowey.
The Miracle and Yankees meet in the finale of the three game series on Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m. The Miracle send RHP Danny Powers (2-0, 1.33) to the hill while the Yankees send LHP Phil Coke (1-5, 4.12). It is Islands Night at the ballpark, a celebration of Sanibel and Captiva Island with a pre-game parade beginning at 6:30.
