Washington Wild Things News Release

Washington, PA- Despite a gallant comeback effort, The Washington Wild Things were unable to complete the three game sweep of the Florence Freedom Sunday afternoon at CONSOL Energy Park. Washington stunned Florence with two walk-off victories on Friday and Saturday, but the Freedom answered with an 8-5 victory Sunday.

Luke Wilkins took to the mound for the Wild Things and faced off against Cody Gray of the Freedom.

Sam Eberle started things off for the Freedom with a leadoff double in the top of 2nd. Ozzy Gonzalez would then drive in Eberle with a RBI single to give Florence the early lead. Daniel Fraga and Zac Mitchell went on to open up the game with back to back two RBI singles, making it 5-0 in favor of the Freedom.

Florence would continue their offensive surge, when Andrew Godbold nailed a solo shot to left field in the 3rd inning.

Washington, however, was able to get that run back in a hurry, when Maxx Garrett hit his second home run in the same number of days, cutting Washington's deficit to 6-1 in the bottom of the 3rd. Carter Bell went on to belt a three run homer over the left field wall, trimming Florence's lead to 6-4 in the 4th inning.

Ozzy Gonzalez added to his big day at the plate in the 6th inning, when he sent a two run shot over the left field fencing. Gonzalez's first career frontier league home run extended Florence's lead to 8-4.

Washington wouldn't quit fighting, however. Maxx Garrett continued his strong play with an RBI single in the bottom of the 7th, closing in on Florence's lead.

Despite providing plenty of traffic on the base paths throughout the remainder of the game, the Wild Things were unable to complete the come back and would fall to the Freedom by the score 8-5. Pete Levitt (3-2) picked up the win for Florence, and Luke Wilkins (5-3) suffered the loss for Washington. Chuck Weaver earned the save for Florence.

Washington will travel to Traverse City to meet the Beach Bums in a three game series. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 7:05 p.m on Tuesday, August 4th. For tickets, please visit the Wild Things front office, call 724-250-9555 or visit www.washingtonwildthings.com.
