Midwest Sliders of Ypsilanti News Release
Slippery Rock, PA -After a month of deliberations, 92 unique team name submissions, and nearly 1,000 votes in the Name the Team contest, Slippery Rock Professional Baseball announced "Sliders" as the team's nickname. Sliders had the most nominations in the first round of the contest and received nearly twice as many votes as any of the other three finalists (Boulders, Rockers, and Sluggers). Also unveiled was the team logo, featuring a baseball sliding through a circle. Forest green will be the team's primary color, accented by black and gray.
The inaugural season logo and merchandise were designed by Ibistek Apparel of Butler, who will be serving as the official merchandiser for Slippery Rock Professional Baseball. Souvenirs are available through Ibistek Apparel's webpage (www.ibistekapparel.com) and through a link at www.srprobaseball.com.
"We'd like to thank the fans who submitted names, voted in the contest, and who showed up for tonight's announcement," said Sliders general manager Steve Tahsler. "We hope that the response to our contest is indicative of the strong following we strive to develop during our inaugural season."
Dr. Amy Walters, an assistant professor in the Department of Communication at Slippery Rock University, was chosen as the winner from the ten people who submitted "Sliders" as a team name choice. Dr. Walters will receive four tickets to the Sliders' inaugural home game, be introduced with the team on behalf of the fan base, and participate in the first pitch ceremonies on Opening Night.
Slippery Rock Professional Baseball will begin its inaugural season on Wednesday, May 23, at the Washington Wild Things. The home opener will be on Tuesday, May 29, against the Florence Freedom. 32 home games will be played during the summer at Jack Critchfield Park on the campus of Slippery Rock University.
