Midwest Sliders of Ypsilanti News Release
Slippery Rock, PA - The Slippery Rock Sliders professional baseball team will hold an open tryout on Sunday, April 15 at Jack Critchfield Park on the campus of Slippery Rock University. Check-in for the tryout begins at 8:00 am, with the workouts starting at 9. Information and registration forms are available at www.slipperyrocksliders.com.
The Slippery Rock Sliders are an expansion, independent professional baseball team in the Frontier League. Entering its 15th season, the Frontier League has moved over 500 players into Major League Baseball organizations, the most of any independent league. 14 former Frontier League players have played Major League Baseball, 13 of whom made their professional debuts in the Frontier League.
Players wishing to try out for the Sliders must have been born after January 1, 1980 and cannot have any college eligibility remaining. Players should bring their own glove and bats.
In the event of inclement weather, the workouts will be held in the indoor facilities at Slippery Rock University.
"I view our open tryouts as an integral part of my player recruitment efforts," said Sliders' field manager Greg Jelks. "In my five previous seasons managing in the Frontier League, 14 players that I have signed out of open tryouts have appeared in regular season games. Being an expansion team, the opportunity is there for players interested in continuing their baseball careers."
The Slippery Rock Sliders will begin their inaugural season on Wednesday, May 23, at the Washington Wild Things. The home opener will be on Tuesday, May 29, against the Florence Freedom. 32 home games will be at Jack Critchfield Park on the campus of Slippery Rock University.
