
Sledge named NL Rookie of the Month

EDMONTON, AB - The Edmonton Trapper Baseball Club announced today that former Trapper Terrmel Sledge has been named the National League Rookie of the Month for May. In addition left-handed pitcher Wilfredo Rodriguez has been transferred to Edmonton from Single-A Brevard County. Edmonton's roster currently stands at 24 players; 12 pitchers, two catchers, five infielders and five outfielders, plus three players (right-hander Seung Song, infielder Henry Mateo and catcher Randy Knorr) on the disabled list.
Sledge, the 2003 Trapper of the Year, batted .316 with 12 RBI, including four home runs in the month of May. He scored 10 runs, compiled a .366 on-base percentage and a .526 slugging percentage in 25 games. The native of Fayetteville, North Carolina, was the Expos Minor League Player of the Year in 2003 and won the system's Triple Crown with a .324 average, 22 homers and 92 RBI. He began the 2004 season 0-for-22, but after getting his first Major League hit on April 19 Sledge has gone 22-for-52, a .423 average.
Rodriguez, 25, was 2-2, 7.06 (21.2 IP - 17 ER) in five starts with Brevard County this season. The native of Cuidad Bolivar, Venezuela started the season on the disabled list with Double-A Harrisburg before being transferred to Brevard County. He underwent elbow surgery in April of 2002 and missed the remainder of that season and all of the 2003 campaign. Before the surgery he was 45-34, 3.66 (622.2 IP - 253 ER) with one shutout in 145 appearances (93 starts) with the Houston Astros organization. Rodriguez was originally signed as a non-drafted free agent July, 25 1995 by the Astros and progressed to Double-A Round Rock before being promoted to Houston in 2001. He was 0-0, 15.00 (3.0 IP - 5 ER) in two appearances with the Astros and surrendered Barry Bonds' record tying 70th home run on October 4, 2001.
The next Trapper home game will be on Thursday, June 10 when the club will take on the Las Vegas 51s. The game will begin at 7:05 PM.
