Sussex Skyhawks News Release
The Sussex Skyhawks played four games last week at Quebec, finishing with a record of 2-2. Wednesday night's game started out with the Skyhawks up 1-0 in the top of the first inning. However, the Quebec Capitales scored four times in the bottom of the first to take a 4-1 lead and never looked back en route to the win, 6-5. Quebec starting pitcher Eric Gagne picked up his second win of the season. He allowed four earned runs on seven hits while striking out five in seven innings of work. The following night on Thursday, Quebec was trailing 4-2 entering the bottom of the sixth inning. The Capitales rallied for six runs and went on to win 8-5. Capitales CF Goefrey Tomlinson led the way at the plate. He was 2-for-4 with a run scored and a RBI. Quebec 1st baseman Pierre-Luc LaForest was 1-for-4 with a solo home run to aid in the win. The Skyhawks then went on to win the final two games at Quebec. On Friday night, Skyhawks 3B Jeremy Hunt and 1B John Urick led the Skyhawks to an easy 7-2 win against Quebec on the road Friday night. The duo combined to go 6-for-8 at the plate with a pair of home runs, four runs scored and six RBI. Sussex starting pitcher Carter Clements had a solid outing as well. He scattered nine hits and allowed two runs in 6 2/3 innings of work to earn the win and run his record to 3-2. Behind a solid outing from starter Mike Schellinger, Sussex claimed a 5-1 victory at Quebec Saturday night. Schellinger worked seven innings and allowed just one earned run to up his mark to 4-3 on the season. RF Maikel Jova was an offensive force for the Skyhawks as he finished 3-for-4 with three RBI in the contest. Sussex 1B John Urick added two hits as well and CF Jorge Moreno drove in two runs with a two-out single in the seventh inning to put the game out of reach. The Skyhawks then moved on to Brockton, where they would only play 2 games after Tuesday night's game was rained out. It will be made up as a doubleheader in Augusta on August 10. Brockton got a good effort from starting pitcher Jeff Long Sunday night and survived a late rally to edge Sussex. Long allowed one run on six hits while striking out four and walking none in five innings of work to earn his third win the year. Trailing 4-1 entering the ninth inning, the Skyhawks rallied for two runs off Rox closer Jerry Dunn, to make it a 4-3 game, but Dunn was able to avoid further damage and earn his 11th save.
The following night on Monday, Sussex used a homerun by 1B John Urick and a RBI single from 2B Chris Brown to top Brockton 2-1. Kyle Ruwe picked up the win for the Skyhawks as he went 7 2/3 innings and allowed just one run on five hits and a walk. He struck out two and with the victory improved his record to 5-3 on the season. Sussex closer Sandy Nin struck out two in the final inning and collected save number five on the year. Wayne Lundgren went all nine innings and struck out eight for Brockton but was the hard luck loser. He allowed two runs on just four hits. His record now stands at 5-5. The Skyhawks return to Augusta for a seven-game homestand, starting at 7:05pm Thursday, July 23 against Worcester.
