Sussex Skyhawks News Release
AUGUSTA, N.J. - *Pinch runner Nick Vardaro was in the game for one pitch, but it proved to be worth it as he scampered home with the winning run as an attempted pickoff throw from catcher Luis Rodriguez sailed into left field to give the Skyhawks a dramatic 8-7 win over the Nashua Pride (11-12) Tuesday night at Skylands Park.
Sussex reliever Matt Petrusek (2-0), who threw just one third of an inning, picked up the win, while Nashua reliever Andrew Weimer took the loss for the Pride.
Sussex (11-13) third baseman Jay Yaconetti led off the bottom of the ninth with a walk. Ron Perodin followed by reaching on a fielder's choice that erased Yaconetti from the base paths. With one out, shortstop Kevin Rios lined a single to right center that allowed Perodin to advance to third.
Jorge Moreno then dropped a base hit to shallow right field and advanced to second on the throw to try to get Rios at third. Walter Young was then intentionally walked to load the bases for Alex Frazier. That's when Vardaro entered the game as a pinch runner on third base. Weimer's first pitch to Frazier was low and Rodriguez came up firing to third. The throw skipped into the outfield allowing Vardaro to trot home with the winning run.
Designated hitter Walter Young put the Skyhawks on the board in the bottom of the third when he drove a sacrifice fly to left field scoring Perodin to make the score 1-0. Right fielder Jorge Moreno blasted a three-run home run to left in the bottom of the fifth to give Sussex a 4-0 lead.
Sussex first baseman Matt Weston socked a solo home run to right field in the bottom of the sixth to snap a tie and give the Skyhawks a 5-4 lead.
Sussex and Nashua return to action tomorrow night at 7:05 p.m. for the second game of the three-game set.
