Colorado Springs Sky Sox News Release

The Colorado Springs Sky Sox beat the Tacoma Rainiers 2-1 in a low scoring affair Saturday night at Security Service Field in front of 2,155 fans.

The Rainiers struck first in what looked like could be a scary night for the Sky Sox when leadoff hitter Prentice Redman belted home run to left field off starting pitcher Kurt Birkins to start the game. Unfortunately for the Rainiers, that would be there one and only run for the game.

Birkins pitched well giving up five hits and one run in four innings of work. His counterpart, Garrett Olson (1-2), pitched well surrendering two runs on three hits over 6 1/3 innings pitched but still took the loss.

The Sky Sox didn't get to Olsen until the bottom of the seventh inning when they were able to make a late rally and take the game from the Rainiers. Carlos Gonzalez lead off the inning getting hit by a pitch and was followed by Matt Murton who drove in Gonzalez on an RBI double hit deep to right field. Murton's double extended his hitting-streak to eleven games. Matt Miller was responsible for the go-ahead and final run for the Sky Sox driving in Murton with an RBI single to give the Sky Sox a 2-1 lead.

Scott Munter (2-0) collected the win in relief of Birkins tossing three shutout innings allowing just two hits to go along with three strikeouts. Joel Peralta notched his second save of the season finishing out the game for the Sky Sox with two shutout innings in the eighth and ninth.

Tomorrow's game is scheduled for a 1:05 PM start and will feature Sox right-hander Josh Fogg (1-0) versus right-hander Gaby Hernandez (0-1) of the Rainiers.
