Colorado Springs Sky Sox News Release
The middle of the order produced three home runs and Josh Towers pitched 7 2/3 innings to help the Colorado Springs Sky Sox win their home opener for the first time in four years, defeating the Tacoma Rainiers 10-7 on Saturday afternoon at Security Service Field.
Towers started the game rocky. The right hander (1-0) allowed a lead-off hit to Bronson Sardinha and then hit second-baseman Yung Chi Chen in the head on the next pitch. Chen would be replaced by Oswaldo Navarro, and both Navarro and Sardinah would come around to score two batters later when Wladimir Balentien doubled to left field.
Towers settled down after the first inning, retiring 13 of the next 14 batters he faced. Meanwhile, the middle of the order finally started to get to Rainiers starting pitcher Sean White in the fourth inning when Joe Koshansky belted a game-tying two-run home run over the right-field wall. Sean Barker would put the Sky Sox ahead in the next inning with a three-run shot of his own.
After Towers allowed four runs in the sixth inning, the Sky Sox came right back with five more in the bottom half of the inning. Back-to-back doubles by Edwin Bellorin and Christian Colonel tied the game before Seth Smith's one-out sacrifice fly four batters later put the Sky Sox ahead for good. Ian Stewart's three-run homer a moment later would cap the scoring for the Sky Sox.
Towers picked up his first victory of the season while Andrew Baldwin (0-1) took the loss for Tacoma. Steven Register picked up his second save of the young season.
