Colorado Springs Sky Sox News Release

Eight straight Colorado Springs' batters hit safely in an eight run third inning as the Sky Sox defeated Portland 14-4, in front of 4,630 fans at Security Service Field Saturday.

Doug Bernier's one-out single started the third inning hit parade that would see the Sky Sox send 11 batters to the plate. The inning also produced a team cycle as Matt Miller doubled, Chris Frey hit his third home run of the season and starting pitcher Sean Smith knocked a triple off the right field wall.

Smith (5-4) earned the win by tossing five innings of four-run ball.

Josh Geer (7-8) took the loss in relief after pitching five innings and allowing eight runs on twelve hits.

Brett Tomko started the game for the Beavers and allowed one hit and one run, a home run off the bat of Doug Bernier, in his one inning of work.

The 14 runs and 19 hits both represent team highs for the Sky Sox this season.

Mike McCoy's five-game hitting streak came to an end with an 0-for-6 performance. The leadoff hitter was the only Sky Sox regular not to get a hit in the game. The other seven starting position players each had multiple hits in the contest, with Bernier, Humberto Cota and Kenny Perez all recording three hits.

The eight straight hits recorded by the Sky Sox in the third inning fell three shy of the PCL record held by Las Vegas. The 51s set the record in the eighth inning on June 20, 2003 at Edmonton.

The Sky Sox and Beavers will continue their five-game series with a double header Sunday. Franklin Morales (8-4, 5.65) will face Justin Germano (2-6, 5.25) in game one. Mark Redman (7-3, 5.00) will face Enrique Gonzalez (6-5, 5.03) in the second contest. The first game is slated to begin at 1:05 MDT with the second game commencing 30 minutes after the conclusion of game one.
