
New Orleans nips 'Birds

Memphis, Tenn. - New Orleans slipped by Memphis 3-2 Saturday night in front of the largest crowd of the year at AutoZone Park with 15,857 fans in attendance.
The Redbirds and Zephyrs matched runs in the first and sixth innings before New Orleans' run in the seventh proved to be the difference. Abraham Nunez greeted Redbirds reliever Matt Scherer with a single and Jesus Feliciano ripped a single up the middle to score Nunez. Memphis rallied to load the bases in the ninth before Z's closer Nate Field closed the door getting Brian Barton to ground into a force out.
Raul Casanova led the Zephyrs with three hits and drove in a run. Josh Phelps went 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles to lead the Redbirds.
Scherer took the loss for the âBirds giving up one run on four hits in two innings of work. Memphis starter P.J. Walters allowed two runs on three hits with five strikeouts over six innings. New Orleans starter Jon Niese earned his third straight win with six solid innings. The lefty gave up two runs on five hits with five strikeouts. Field picked up his 12th save and second in as many days against the âBirds.
Memphis sends Mitchell Boggs to the bump tomorrow afternoon with first pitch scheduled for 1:35 p.m. The Zephyrs will counter with Jose Santiago on the mound.
