Tucson Ends Tacoma's Winning Streak

Tucson, AZ - Tucson ended Tacoma's ten game winning streak with a 7-4 victory on Saturday night. A four run sixth inning outburst by the Sidewinders secured the win over the Rainiers in game two of the four game set.

The Sidewinders got out to an early lead scoring three runs in the first two innings of the game. Tacoma countered with scoring in three straight innings with four runs and took the lead in the fourth inning.

Tucson's Josh Whitesell drove in two of the runs in the first inning with a double to center that brought in Jeff Salazar and Trent Oeltjen. The third run came in the second off a Phil Avlas sacrifice fly to left scoring Wilkin Castillo the next inning.

The Rainiers scored one in the second inning when Rob Johnson scored Shawn Garrett with a sacrifice fly. Prentice Redman led off the third inning with a solo home run and a Luis Valbuena RBI base hit in the fourth inning tied the game. Redman gave Tacoma took the lead in the fourth with a sacrifice fly to right to make the score 4-3 Rainiers.

In the sixth inning Tucson regained the lead after Tacoma's reliever Rich Dorman gave up four runs on five hits. Phil Avlas brought in the first run of the inning with a line drive to left field. The next batter, Salazar, brought in Avlas with his fourth home run of the season. Whitesell plated the last run with a line drive to right field scoring Oeltjen from third.

Major League rehabber Doug Slaten pitched one inning for the Sidewinders. He struck out one, walked one, and gave up one hit. Slaten threw 20 pitches and 12 of them were strikes in his appearance.

The Sidewinders will face Tacoma in the third game of the series on Sunday night at 6:00 PM. RHP Juan Gutierrez (3-10, 6.85) is scheduled to start for Tucson. Right-hander Andrew Baldwin (8-5, 4.94) will start for the Rainiers. The game will air live on COOL 1450 beginning at 5:50 p.m.
