Colorado Springs Sky Sox News Release

Salt Lake jumped ahead early and held on late to beat the Sky Sox 7-6 in front of 6,014 fans at Security Service Field Wednesday night.

The Bees took the early lead in the top of the first as second baseman Howard Kendrick smacked an RBI single to right field off Sky Sox starter Jason Hirsh (5-5). Kendrick was followed by short stop Brandon Wood who recorded an RBI on a sacrifice fly on the very next at-bat giving the Bees a 2-0 lead. The Bees would add another in the second inning as center fielder Reggie Willits singled home the run extending the Bees lead to 3-0.

The Sky Sox answered back in the bottom of the second when starting catcher Edwin Bellorin belted an RBI double to center field off Bees starter Brad Salmon, closing the Bees lead to 3-1.

The Bees weren't finished with Hirsh just yet, as they came out in the third inning buzzing. The Bees knocked out three consecutive RBI starting with Bobby Wilson's RBI single to right. Wilson would then be followed by designated hitter Ben Johnson, who recorded an RBI single to right himself, and Johnson was followed by Adam Pavkovich as he got an RBI with a sacrifice fly to center giving the Bees a commanding 6-1 lead.

Jason Hirsh would be replaced in the sixth by Franklin Nunez after surrendering six runs, five earned, off ten hits with one strikeout. Once Hirsh was replaced the Sky Sox starting putting together a rally. In the bottom of the sixth Chris Frey got things started as he doubled to right, driving in a run to close the gap to 6-2. Eric Young Jr. would follow suit as he hit a single into right field driving in two more runs slicing the lead, once again, this time to 6-4. The Sox weren't finished there, as they added one more run in the bottom of the seventh, this time of Bobby Mosebach (2-0), cutting the Bees lead to one run at 6-5.

The Bees added an insurance run in the top of the ninth giving them a 7-5 advantage, and it's a good thing they did because the Sky Sox brought everything they had in the bottom of the ninth, putting a scare into Salt Lake's closer Jeremy Hill. Hill loaded the bases and walked in a run but eventually got himself out of the jam earning his 17th save of the season as he got Young Jr. to fly out to left field.

Tomorrow night's game will have a 7:05 PM start and will feature right-hander Alan Johnson (7-3, 5.87) of the Sox versus righty Shane Loux (0-1, 3.86) of the Bees. The game will also be the first of two fireworks shows in honor of Independence day.
