Colorado Springs Sky Sox News Release

NEW ORLEANS, LA - The Colorado Springs Sky Sox dropped game one of a four-game series against the New Orleans Baby Cakes 4-2 on Tuesday night. Game two of the series is slated for a 6:00 p.m. first pitch tomorrow evening between righties Michael Brady and Ben Meyer.

The Baby Cakes struck first in tonight's series opener, scoring a run in the bottom of the second inning off of Colorado Springs starter Bubba Derby. Rafael Ortega drew a walk, then stole second (his second steal of the season) to move into scoring position. Johnny Giavotella then lined an RBI double to center, scoring Ortega and giving New Orleans an early 1-0 lead.

The game remained a 1-0 affair into the sixth inning, until Colorado Springs scored to tie the contest at 1-1. Brett Phillips drew a two-out walk, then moved to third on a Christian Bethancourt single. Ji-Man Choi then drove in Phillips with a single for a team-leading eighth RBI.

In the top of the eighth inning Mauricio Dubon kicked things off for Colorado Springs with a leadoff single, but then was thrown out at second on a steal attempt. Phillips then singled to center, but was also thrown out at second when trying to stretch his single into a double. Bethancourt struck out swinging to end the inning and send the tied game into the bottom of the eighth.

The Baby Cakes also led off the eighth inning with a single, as Braxton Lee reached on a shallow-hit ground ball. Magneuris Sierra then reached on a fielder's choice, moving Lee to second. Christian Adames then broke the tie with a bases-clearing triple to put New Orleans up 3-1. Adames then scored on a Jonathan Rodriguez ground out to extend the 'Cakes lead to 4-1.

The Sky Sox didn't go quietly, as Tyrone Taylor belted a solo home run in the top of the ninth inning to make it 4-2, but the rally fell short as New Orleans took game one.

The Sky Sox are on the road for six more games against New Orleans and Round Rock, before returning to Security Service Field on Wednesday, April 25 when they will take on the Omaha Storm Chasers, Triple-A affiliate of the Kansas City Royals.
