Iowa Cubs News Release

DES MOINES, IA - The Nashville Sounds (7-6) slipped by the Iowa Cubs (3-8) 3-2, Tuesday at Principal Park as the I-Cubs left nine stranded and struck out 14 times.

Michael Roth highlighted Iowa's effort, spinning 4.2 shutout innings in relief. He helped his cause in the eighth by snagging a line drive and doubling off a runner on second. Roth limited the Sounds to three hits, while walking three and striking out four.

The Sounds scored one run in each of the second, third and fourth innings to build a 3-0 lead. The I-Cubs got their chance in the fifth, getting RBI hits from Mark Zagunis and Efren Navarro to cut the deficit to one. Iowa proceeded to load the bags with two down, but couldn't put up another run in the inning. The I-Cubs weren't able re-start the offense and managed just two hits through the back four frames.

Wynton Bernard and Zagunis each accounted for two hits on the night. Zagunis tabbed Iowa's only extra-base hit with a double in the fifth.

Iowa and Nashville play the second game of the series tomorrow at 12:08 p.m. at Principal Park. RHP Luke Farrell will take the ball against former Cub LHP Eric Jokisch. For more information or tickets, visit www.iowacubs.com.
