Walla Walla Sweets News Release

WALLA WALLA, WA -- Runs came in bunches for the Walla Walla Sweets Sunday night as they scored 17 times against the San Francisco Seals at Borleske Stadium for their fourth consecutive win.

Sweets third baseman John Skrbec had the first multi-homer game of his baseball career, hitting a two-run blast in the second inning and followed with a solo shot to lead off the third.

"Everybody hit the ball very well," Skrbec said. "It was pretty nice to be a part of that, too."

The Seals still scored first in the non-league match up with two quick runs to start the game 2-0, but the Sweets got to San Francisco's starting pitcher Rob Monchak in the second.

Everybody reached and every single base runner scored for Walla Walla in a 10-run second inning. Second baseman Reggie Southall grounded out to start the frame, but catcher Kevin Hawk and center fielder Beau Bozett both walked. With left fielder and recent Colorado Rockies draft pick (37th round) Luke Persico batting, Hawk scored from second base on a wild pitch that Seals catcher Nico Piscopo couldn't find near the backstop. Persico then singled before Skrbec homered to left. Right fielder Mike Paulson walked and took second base on a wild pitch. He came home to score on first baseman Jarod Gonzales's second triple of the season. Designated hitter Spencer O'Neil and short stop Scott Silva reached on a walk and an error, respectively, and Southall walked to officially bat around. With the bases loaded, Hawk singled on a line drive to center field, but Andy Furia misplayed the ball, allowing O'Neil, Silva and Southall to come home. Hawk reached third on the play and scored when Bozett grounded out to make it a 10-2 ball game.

A base running mistake in the third set the Seals down in order after that long inning. Furia singled to lead off and was moved over to second on a sacrifice bunt. With one out, Piscopo lined out to right field and Furia ran to third without tagging up. That set up an easy double play for Paulson who threw to second for the third out.

That's when Skrbec led off the bottom of the third with his second homer of the day, a towering drive to left field. His teammates greeted him the best way they knew how.

"You know what? I got the silent treatment," Skrbec said with a smile. "They let me put my stuff away, and then they jumped all over me, so that was pretty neat."

Sweets starter Connor Dillman went five complete innings, allowing three earned runs on nine hits while striking out five and walking two. Joe Arlt came on in relief to strike out the side in his first Sweets appearance. Seals starter Rob Monchak took the loss. Monchak went just two innings and allowed 12 runs on six hits and seven walks, striking out two.

As a team, Walla Walla punched out 14 hits on the night to wrap up the two game set. In those two games, the Sweets offense outscored the Seals 30-6. They move their overall season record to 4-1 as the Seals fall to 1-5 this year.

The Sweets hit the road Wednesday for three games at Klamath Falls to take on the Gems before heading to Medford to play the Rogues.
